Connie Smalls is a retired newspaper journalist who has worked as a writer/editor for more than 30 years. Her journalism training began in the U.S. Army when she attended the Defense Information School at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana. She has edited and written for three Army publications in Virginia: The Transport Times at the School Brigade at Fort Eustis, The Wheel, post newspaper at Fort Eustis, and Casemate, post newspaper at Fort Monroe. Since her retirement, she has written numerous children’s stories, with “Monroe, the Moat Monster,” a favorite, due to the history of Fort Monroe and the rumors of ghosts that are said to inhabit the old stone fortress. The moat monster children’s series offers readers fantasy and a touch of history to not only entertain, but also to educate.
